Doesn't matter how experienced a hiker you are, you'll need some equipment:
You can rent equipment at many sports stores. Ask the experts there how to attach the klettersteig set to your harness.
This hike winds through a valley, the beautiful Hofbauernweißach river running through it. I love hiking and biking next to a river—it makes the landscape feel alive—and many Bavarian rivers are a stunning color because of the limestone.
When you reach the end of the valley, there is a waterfall and a steep scramble to the top with some klettersteig. It's fun and a bit challenging, although my 12-year-old had no problem.
I've hiked here many times. One gorgeous sunny day, seven of the happiest German men I've ever met crossed our path and made us smile. In the gallery, you can see a pic I took of them trekking across the hilly green.
12 km | 5-6 hrs | short klettersteig
In summer, you can drive the 3km from Pertisau to the Gramaialm, but I recommend biking from Pertisau, then locking your bike at the start of the singletrack trail. (Bikers do descend the singletrack, which looks fun, but I can't comfortably manage the uphill.)
The hike up to the Lamsenjochhütte (1,953 m) is a set of switchbacks overlooking a lovely valley. Enjoy a nice lunch in the sun, then walk a section that looks like the moon, to the rock face. The klettersteig starts here and ascends into the tunnel. You emerge out of a hole in the rock.
From there, we hiked around the back of the Lamsenspitze mountain (you can go another 30 mins or so to the top—2,508 m), and down another klettersteig route (Normalweg).
Biking back to the lake—Achensee—and having a short paddle on the SUP will make this an epic day. Bike, hike, climb, and SUP!
10.5 km | 5-6 hrs | 2 klettersteig routes
The Alpspitze (2628 m) is one of Germany's highest peaks. This hike has a challenging route and stunning views.
I've included only the short loop from the top of the Alpspitzbahn to the Alpspitze summit. Make this hike longer by hiking up to and/or down from the loop.
I did this route with 5 friends and a super nice and very knowledgeable guide—Alexander Baier at Bergführungen.
